Gylfi Sigurdsson and Phil Jagielka have both reflected on the poor Everton showing against Southampton and spoke of their determination to turn things around.

With Sigurdsson scoring his first goal in the game to bring us back level at one all, he told the Official Site.

‘It is disappointing. I think we were lucky to get back in the game. At 1-1 at half-time I thought we could nick something but the performance in the second half was far from good enough. It is difficult to take this result and performance today. We will be back in tomorrow morning and we have to make sure we perform better throughout 90 minutes against West Ham.’

He went on to say.

‘All of the players are determined to turn this around. We need a little bit of luck, we got back into the game today but we need to make sure we take advantage of those situations. And we have to be better defensively as a team, all the way from the front, and make it harder for teams to break us down.’

As for his goal, he admitted he’d have preferred three points.

‘No, we lost the game and lost badly. The positive thing is we have two more games this week. We must go into the next one with a bit of positivity and try to get something from the game. We have two very important games coming up now. We are playing at home and we need to get six points. It is hard to look at that (individual form) when you have lost 4-1 and the season is going the way it is going. You are just trying to get some momentum back for the team. We felt we were going in the right direction with a win and a draw so it is a big setback for us. But we have two games this week, so we need to focus on those and get a good performance.’

As for Jagielka, he knew it simply hadn’t been good enough.

‘There`s no excuses for the way we performed. The way we performed first half wasn`t great but we managed to get away with it with Gylfi`s goal but then came out for five minutes after the break to sort things out but gave two goals away. Then the confidence just totally went.’

Our skipper went on to add.

‘It`s difficult whenever you get beat but at the moment we seem to be shipping in too many goals. We`re trying but things aren`t going our way at the moment. Hopefully we can get some points back on the board on Wednesday. There`s no excuses for the way we performed today. We have players good enough to get a result but unfortunately too many players didn`t perform. Everyone`s feeling the hurt.’
