Many Everton supporters have been reacting on social media after the Evening Standard reported that West Ham United are looking into alternatives for Andre Gomes.

The Irons are our most-likely rival in the race for the FC Barcelona-owned midfielder, at present, despite earlier interest emerging across London at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs are now seemingly focused on landing another player we have been linked with in Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso, who Sky Sports understand would prefer a move to North London where he could connect with compatriot Mauricio Pochettino. He would also set any interested side back his entire £88million release clause.

For West Ham, though, the players they have in mind, should Gomes reject the chance to join the Irons, are Newcastle United duo Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey, who would each be available at £15million and count toward their homegrown quota.

The Hammers have so far bid £20millon for Gomes after their initial £18million offer was rejected, but they have since been informed that the player would prefer a permanent switch to Goodison Park.

It has been claimed the 25-year-old told his close friends at the end of the season that he intends to remain on Merseyside beyond his year on loan, but we are still yet to lodge an official bid.

Barcelona are expected to demand at least £25million to take the FC Porto product off their hands this summer, while Director of Football Marcel Brands reportedly feels the player’s desire to remain a Blue can help drive that figure down.

When it was shared on Reddit that West Ham were looking at alternatives for Gomes, here’s how these Everton supporters reacted…

  • Never heard of him till west ham showed an apparent interest. Being wot appears to be a Barcelona reject and spurs already apparently pulling out – if reports turn out to be true – Not fussed. Bonne chance.
