Chelsea’s Ashley Cole will be winning his 100th cap for England this evening.

The left back has been given the nod ahead of Everton’s Leighton Baines who is now widely thought of as the best left back in the Premier League today, not just by Evertonians, but football pundits across Europe.

Cole of course reaches the milestone in the prestigious friendly against Brazil to mark 150 years of the Football Association.

In a way it’s a nice touch to give him the chance to reach the landmark in an important game, but being biased we believe that Baines should be keeping hold of the shirt as he deserves it.

Baines played down the competition for the role when he spoke ahead of the game last week and opted instead to praise upcoming left backs Ryan Bertrand, Kieran Gibbs and Luke Shaw and on the brink of his 100th cap Ashley Cole also spoke well of both Baines and the youngsters coming through for England.

“It is not just about me or Leighton but about the team, If he is playing well and plays in front of me, it is going to benefit the team. Cole told The Express.

He added: “It is not as if I am going to start moaning or saying I should be playing.

“We are a big squad. We are all great players. If there comes a time – and there will – when I am not first-choice left-back, it won`t be a problem.”

“I am proud to play for England, From being a little boy from the East End, you would never think you would get a chance to represent your country.”
