Everton left Anfield empty-handed on Sunday after suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to arch-rivals Liverpool, where the only goal of the match came in the dying minutes.

The Toffees put in a valiant performance in the Merseyside Derby and will feel hard done by following the result, which came after Jordan Pickford’s error presented a golden opportunity for Divock Origi to score the only goal of the match.

England’s first-choice goalkeeper has since faced a wealth of criticism for his mistake but Everton fans have generally been supportive of the former Sunderland man – with legendary stopper Neville Southall also sending words of encouragement.

Taking to Twitter, Southall urged Pickford to keep his head up and ignore the critics that will emerge during the week with comments that delighted Everton supporters, who then reacted to the message from their former keeper.

We have gathered some of their reactions below.
