Everton fans have been crying out on social media in the hopes, however slim, that Kevin Campbell comes out of retirement to ‘save the day once again’.
The Toffees faithful rallied their cry in response to the club’s tweet wishing their iconic centre-forward a happy birthday on Monday, as the former England U21 international turned 49.
Campbell featured for Everton 147 times in all competitions having moved to Goodison Park from Trabzonspor in 2000, scoring 45 goals, with his spell on Merseyside returning his most prolific form.
The one-time UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup winner retired in 2007, however, after a year with Cardiff where he made just 19 appearances.
Twelve years out of the game has not put every Everton fan off wanting Campbell to lace up his boots again at Goodison Park, as many see the 49-year-old as the saviour to their season that continues to splutter without a lethal centre-forward.
Here’s a roundup of some of the Toffees faithful asking Campbell to come home…
