‘Big year for him’ – Some Everton fans react to £22.5million-rated ace’s recognition

|

Everton’s Yerry Mina caught the eye of many at last summer’s World Cup with his efforts for Colombia, as the South American side reached the Round of 16 and took England to penalties.

You could easily argue that it was his displays in Russia that helped to facilitate his €30.25million (£27.19m) move from FC Barcelona to Goodison Park, too, as his efforts in Royal Blue during the domestic season failed to garner the same sort of reception.

Regular injury problems played their part in Mina being an infrequent name on a Marco Silva teamsheet as well, as the 24-year-old missed 25 games between July 30, 2018 and May 12, 2019 – totalling 123 days on the sidelines – resulting in just 12 starts for Everton in his 15 appearances across all competitions.

But the £22.5million-rated centre-back has been proving his fitness this summer at the Copa America, where he played a full ninety minutes in all but one of Colombia’s ties on route to penalty heartache at the hands of Chile in the Quarter-Finals.

Mina’s efforts at the tournament have also been recognised by WhoScored, who have included the 6 ft 3 defender in their Team of the Tournament, in a back four consisting of Brazil’s Dani Alves and Felipe Luis, alongside Uruguay’s Jose Gimenez.

WhoScored included Mina in their Best XI as they felt he performed ‘admirably’ in his three appearances, where he ‘maximised his height well with four aerial duels won per game’, enough to rank inside the top 10.

The now 21-cap international also completed 85.4% of his 43.3 passes per game, enough to warrant an average match rating of 7.35.

Here’s how these Everton fans reacted when Mina’s recognition for his efforts at the Copa America was shared on Reddit
