Anthony Gordon joins list of ‘Everton Elite’ after hat-trick in Sydney

|

Everton winger, Anthony Gordon scored an impressive hat-trick in his side’s 5-1 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers today, becoming the first Everton player to score a hat-trick in 2 years and their first away from Goodison Park since 2016.

Gordon has had his fair share of critics this season after some poor performances recently, but he still remains Everton’s top scorer in the Premier League this season with 3 goals.

However, he has put in two decent performances in Everton’s fixtures during their mid-season friendly tournament in Sydney, scoring 3 goals in today’s victory over Western Sydney Wanderers, who currently sit 2nd in the A-League.

The 21-year-old also becomes the first Everton player to score a hat-trick since Dominic Calvert-Lewin bagged three under Carlo Ancelotti in their 5-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion in 2020.

Prior to Gordon’s 3 goals, the blues had only managed 8 hat-tricks in the last decade.

Louis Saha scored the club’s first in 2011 when he scored 4 goals in a 5-3 victory over Blackpool at Goodison Park.

They would have to wait four years for the next one, but just like buses, 3 would come at once. Romelu Lukaku would score 3 against Young Boys in the Europa League, Steven Naismith would score all of EFC’s goals in a 3-1 victory over Chelsea and, rather surprisingly, Arouna Kone would score 3 in a 6-2 victory over Sunderland all before the end of 2015.

Romelu Lukaku would score two hat-tricks in the 2016/17 Premier League season, one of which coming in a 6-3 drubbing of Bournemouth in which he bagged 4.

The return of Wayne Rooney would be marked with a hat trick completed from the halfway line under caretaker manager, David Unsworth before Ronald Koeman would take over.

Although some of the names on this list are quite peculiar, most of them have had quite successful careers at Everton. Hopefully, Anthony Gordon can build on his good performances and bring this form into their next Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on boxing day. Recent reports have suggested that the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are still interested in acquiring the winger, so it should be interesting to see his situation going into the January transfer window.
