Another injury boost for Everton as 24-year-old starts ‘partial training’ with first-team

Everton have given an injury update on Jean-Philipe Gbamin ahead of Tuesday’s meeting with Newcastle United, revealing the 24-year-old is nearing a return after taking part in “partial training” with the first-team.

Gbamin has been out of action since August due to a thigh injury that forced him to undergo surgery. The midfielder is on the recovery trail, however, and could be back out on the pitch next month. Andre Gomes is in a similar position too.

Carlo Ancelotti said in Monday’s pre-match press conference: “Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin are training individually and everything is going well, but it takes time. They suffered big injuries. Gbamin has started partial training with the team and we will see (how he reacts) in the next days.”

Gbamin has made only two appearances in all competitions this season, the last of which came in Everton’s 1-0 win over Watford (August 17, 2019). The Ivorian international has missed 26 games across the board due to injury but should play a part in the last three months of the campaign.

Ancelotti won’t want to rush him back after his lengthy absence, but Gbamin’s return should be in a matter of weeks rather than months. It’s a real boost for Everton that he’s taking part in first-team training and his return could help the Toffees finish the season strongly.

Everton are 11th in the Premier League with 29 points from 23 games and could move into the top-half with a win over Newcastle.
