With a more youthful looking Everton side from manager Marco Silva for Wednesday evening’s EFL Cup tie against Rotherham United, one man, in particular, stood out to many fans.
Gylfi Sigurdsson opened up the scoring on the evening and Dominic Calvert-Lewin added a second half brace to give us a 3-1 victory and passage through to the third round of the competition. Summer signing Lucas Digne certainly stood out to fans for his performance in the left-back slot, but with a number of youngsters on display, Jonjoe Kenny was a hot topic of conversation following the match.
DCL, Tom Davies, Mason Holgate and Kieran Dowell all started for the gaffer with a smattering of youth on the bench in the shape of Joao Virginia and Matthew Pennington, but these fans were delighted with Kenny’s individual showing as he grasped his chance to impress with both hands.
HT #EFC 1-0 #RUFC: Nervy start for the Blues but improved as the game progressed. Sandro looked lively while Kenny the stand-out. Sigurdsson, Zouma & Digne have also shone

HT EFC 1-0 RUFC.
Jonjoe Kenny and Lucas Digne standouts.
Very impressive down both flanks.— Tony Scott (@Tony_Scott11) August 29, 2018
Well done Everton, DCL was classy, Digne & Kenny we’re great. Zonal marking still triggers me but can’t complain w/ 3-1. #EFC

Davies and Digne the stand outs tonight IMO. Kenny and Siggy good as well. Davies MOTM for me, Good run out. We've been knocked out by these teams over the years so good to see the manager take it seriously. #EFC

Really happy with that tonight. It was a weird side but they got it done after a slow start. Digne and Kenny looked excellent, Zouma and Holgate fine (apart from that goal), DCL huffed and puffed and got his rewards. Onto the next round, let's win this bloody cup for once. #EFC

Digne great tonight, thought Kenny was decent as well. Conceding off corners for 3 games running is worrying, zonal marking doesn’t work #Everton

It was the 21-year-old’s first appearance of the 2018/19 campaign but Silva would’ve been impressed with what he saw so with Cup progression secured, we’re bound to see him again at least in that competition if he doesn’t get another Premier League shot in the near future.
