Following the conclusion of the summer transfer window, focus has rightly returned to the action on the pitch. That said, we’ve still yet to see some of our recruits to take to the field for the first time, such as Bernard.

To the club’s credit, we had to challenge with a whole host of prestigious European clubs to secure the signing of Bernard. Reportedly, the likes of Chelsea, AC Milan, and West Ham were all interested in the 25-year-old’s services, but, thankfully, he chose us.

The move represents a significant change for the Brazilian winger, who has only played in his native Brazil and Ukraine prior to making a move to the Premier League. At Shakhtar Donetsk, he established himself as an important player and amassed invaluable experience playing in the Champions League and Europa League. Over the course of his career with the Ukrainian side, Bernard amassed 28 goals in 157 appearances, a satisfactory return for a winger. He is valued at £14.4M by transfermarkt.

His goal contributions have steadily increased over the course of the past two seasons, having scored seven goals in all competitions during the 2016-17 season, and netting ten goals last season. The winger, who has been capped 14 times by Brazil, is regarded for his versatility and adaptability.

He predominantly plays as a left-winger, but he’s also capable of operating as an attacking midfielder, and he’s appreciated for his industry and creativity.

In a team that’s looking to compete with the best in the division, it’s crucial that players from all positions are capable of contributing with goals. The presence of Bernard will help to augment our creativity while lessening the burden on our creative stars to score. That said, his presence will increase competition for a place in Marco Silva’s attack, which could elevate the performances of other first-team players.
