Former Player Contacted About Vacant Position

|

Everton have reportedly made contact with former player Wayne Rooney, following the sacking of Frank Lampard on Monday evening.

Rooney, who is currently in charge of Major League Soccer side DC United, has been linked with a return to Goodison Park to fill the vacant position in the club’s dugout, though the former England international is said to have reservations about taking up the role.

It is not the first time that the 37-year-old has been rumoured to take charge at Goodison Park, having previously been linked with the manager’s spot in January 2022 prior to the appointment of Frank Lampard.

Indeed, Rooney revealed last year that he turned down the opportunity to manage his former club after Everton approached him when he was in charge of Derby County.

“Everton approached my agent and asked me to interview for the job,” he said at the time.

“But I turned it down. I believe I will be a Premier League manager and I am ready for that 100 per cent. But I have a job at Derby, which is important to me.”

Rooney subsequently made the move Stateside in July of last year, taking over at the club at which he enjoyed a 2-year spell at the end of his playing career.

However, it seems that Everton have now made a second approach for the Croxteth-born coach, with the role at Goodison Park vacant once more less than 12 months after Lampard’s appointment.

Rooney however is allegedly unconvinced by the role and quite frankly this is music to my ears, as I am unconvinced that his appointment would be successful.

His inexperience would leave us equally as exposed tactically as we were under Lampard.

The club needs an astute and experienced coach to drag us out of the mire, not an overly romanticized narrative of Rooney returning for the second time.
