Everton midfielder set for long-term absence

|

Everton have today confirmed that James Garner is expected to be out of action for around two months with a back injury.

Garner signed for the blues during the summer transfer window from Manchester United for around £12 million as part of Frank Lampard’s overhaul of the Everton midfield.

Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gana Gueye, both of whom are currently away playing in the Qatar World Cup, also joined the club in the summer to bolster the midfield.

Since joining the club, the 21-year-old has struggled for game-time with the in-form Alex Iwobi in his preferred position in the Everton lineup and the ‘more experienced’ Gana Gueye and Onana also taking their places in the starting squad.

He has, however, made 7 appearances for the toffees, coming on as a second-half substitute in 6 of them.

However, he did not travel with the rest of the squad for their trip to Australia to play a pair of mid-season friendly fixtures because of a back injury that he sustained in training.

After a scan, it has been revealed that the Merseyside-born midfielder will be out of action for around two months.

With Tom Davies also dropping out of the squad’s trip to Australia through injury, the blues are now short of back-up in midfield and must now hope that neither Gana Gueye or Onana pick up any injuries during international duty.

However, academy graduate, Issac Price put in some decent performances during Everton’s recent fixtures and could have earned himself a few first-team minutes in the Premier League.
